Master Food Preserver Program
WSU Master Food Preservers
Do you want to know more about preserving food safely? How about keeping your food safe? Are you interested in knowing the ‘whys’ behind food spoilage and how to preserve foods safely?
If so, you will enjoy the Washington State University Master Food Preserver volunteer program. You will attend 7 full day sessions that include actual canning experiences.
Becoming a WSU Master Food Preserver is easy…
All you need is an interest in preserving your own food safely and helping others learn.
In return for the 40 hours of training, WSU Master Food Preservers are asked to volunteer 80 hours over the next year helping others with food safety and preservation information.
Master Food Preservers are trained to:
- Answer food safety and preservation questions.
- Extend researched recommendations that provide safely preserved food
- Assist with classes for consumers
Master Food Preservers major responsibilities are:
- Serve as a resource person in the county to answer food preservation questions and test pressure gauges.
- Volunteer 80 hours sharing your knowledge with others
- Serve as a team member with WSU Extension Faculty and other volunteers in sharing food safety and preservation information
Master Food Preserver volunteer activities include:
- Answering consumer questions on the Food Safety Hotline and community events.
- Develop and staff displays at community events
- Testing pressure cannier gauges during the summer
- Assist in teaching classes in the community
Volunteers who wish to become a Master Food Preserver should:
- Have a desire to learn and share knowledge
- Have an interest in food safety and food preservation.
- Be willing to follow WSU food safety and food preservation recommendations
- Be willing to represent WSU Extension as a trained volunteer
- Be willing and able to pay back a minimum of 80 hours volunteer service over the next year
The Master Food Preserver training course will cover:
- In-depth study of food safety and specific procedures in food handling, preparation and preservation.
- Update on food safety, food preservation and equipment.
- Safe and correct food preservation methods
- Hands on canning sessions each week

- Orientation Friday March 8 10–11:30 AM
- Class sessions: Thursdays 9am–1pm. March 21, 28, April 4, 11, 18, 25

- Canning Sessions: Thursdays: May 2, 9, 16, 23, 30

- Location: Clark County Food Bank
- Celebration and final exam: June 7 9am–noon
